First-timer’s guide to shisha

How does shisha work?

Shisha (also called hookah) uses flavored tobacco heated with charcoal; you inhale the smoke after it passes through water. One person can use a pipe alone or share it with friends. Some shops offer nicotine-free flavors.

How are prices set?

Most shops charge for the pipe plus a table charge (seat fee) and drinks. Some also add sharing fees or late-night surcharges, so don’t judge the total by the pipe price alone.

What should I watch out for on the day?

Tokyo shisha FAQ

Our Japanese station guides list the most shops in Shinjuku (21 across 4 areas), Ebisu (19), Roppongi (17), Akasaka (16) and Ikebukuro (14). If you already know the neighborhood, start there.

PONTE Villetta in Ebisu opens at 10:00; C.STAND Shinjuku East Exit, AndU in Ueno and Rendezvous in Akasaka open at 11:00. Some shops change opening times by day, so check for your date.

FREAKS in Shinjuku (Kabukicho) and SHISHA BAR ROPPONGI are listed as open 24 hours. C.STAND Shinjuku East Exit, NAROZ Shinjuku and LOTUS UENO are open until 7:00.
